Dating back to 1885, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium has been captivating minds with amazing animals and a look at the nature and environment of the area. With 80,000 visitors a year including 10,000 children on field trips, the Woods Hole Science Aquarium is a must-see when visiting Cape Cod!
Owned by the Federal government and operated by the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Association (NOAA) Marine Fisheries Service, the aquarium features non-releasable harbor seals, animals of the northeast and middle Atlantic, exhibits, education and information about the species and habitats of the area, and tanks where visitors can touch hermit crabs, starfish, horseshoe crabs, spider crabs, lobsters and more!
Visitors are also able to get a glimpse at the behind-the-scenes workings of the Woods Hole Science Aquarium by seeing how the staff feeds the animals, cleans the tanks, and works on the life support systems.
According to the Woods Hole Science Aquarium, the animals there include, cod, haddock, flounders, lobster, striped bass, and many others. There is also an outdoor seal habitat which is a 17,000 gallon pool for seals who cannot live in the wild. Feeding sessions are usually open to the public and happen in the morning and right before closing.
Some may not know that the Woods Hole Science Aquarium is the oldest aquarium in the United States. Spencer Baird, the first U.S. Fish Commissioner created a summer research station in Woods Hole in 1875 and allowed visitors to come in and see the research and animals. However, in 1885, the actual US Fish Commission opened a building for the purpose of allowing the public to view the animals and learn more about the area.
The Woods Hole Aquarium is open year-round Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is closed on Federal holidays. Admission is free, however donations are encouraged. There are over 140 species of marine life that you can visit and learn more about. Parking is limited near the Woods Hole Science Aquarium so plan ahead especially in the summer months.
