Everything You Need to Know about Monomoy Island

Where It Is

Monomoy Island, a true treasure of Cape Cod, is an 8-mile spit of sand off the coast of Chatham, Massachusetts.  This island’s history can be traced back to the 1700s, when a tavern was constructed here for sailors passing through.  With the area’s abundance of fish, a village soon developed and thrived off selling their many types of fish to those living on the mainland.  However, numerous hurricanes and other storms eventually drove all the villagers away to safer grounds.  Today, the only living things on Monomoy Island are a wide variety of plants and animals; this area does not have any human life, electricity, or roads.  The only remaining building is the Monomoy Lighthouse.

How to Get There

The best way to get to this island is by taking the Monomoy Island Ferry.  These vessels are the ideal way to see the countless Cape Cod seals that live in these waters!  You might even catch a glimpse of Chatham’s resident great white sharks as well.  The Monomoy Island Ferry also provides walking tours of the island to educate visitors about the wildlife that lives here.  They also offer Monomoy Island fishing for all those avid outdoorsmen visiting Chatham, MA!

Things to Do There

The best activity here is observing the countless species of birds, animals, reptiles, amphibians, and other creatures living here!  This island is home to the Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, a protected area that was created to provide a safe home for the many migratory birds, such as the rare piping plover.  Go for a stroll through the acres and acres of marshes, dunes, ponds, and other natural features to see how many creatures you can spot here!  You will love spending time in the great outdoors of this peaceful and secluded island of Cape Cod.
