WORKSHOP DETAILS: Join award-winning painter Elle Foley at the charming seaside Chatham Gables Inn, for an intensive workshop for all levels of artists who want to learn the time-honored joy of painting “en plein air”. Painting “en plein air” is a term made popular by the French Impressionists and translates as “painting in the open air.” Our connection to nature and surroundings is derived from this form of intense observation, in the tradition of painting and drawing.
The aim is to learn to interpret our surroundings in terms of paint, using light and color to create form. Color relationships, design and composition, and the inspiration of painting outdoors are discussed, as well as how to design and build a painting that carries a sense of place. Students focus on values, shapes, edges, and color as they relate to their painting.
There are brief demonstrations each day and one-on-one advice in the field. Exercises include creating small color sketches, to mass in, prior to working on larger canvases.
In the event of inclement weather, we will work on interiors or still life set up indoors. Workshop also includes meet & greet with Elle, bountiful breakfasts each morning, coffee, tea & cookies each afternoon.
We will travel the countryside finding inspiration from beach, vineyards and town streets.
